Breckenridge Vanilla Porter [Breckenridge Brewery]

Breckenridge Vanilla Porter
Brewery: Breckenridge Brewery
Style: American Porter
ABV: 4.7%

I love a good porter, and I was intrigued when I saw Breckenridge’s Vanilla Porter at the convenience store. According to the brewery’s website, this beer uses real vanilla beans from Paupau New Guinea and Madagascar. The vanilla flavor is definitely prominent here, although there is also a lingering coffee taste. In comparison to most porters, this brew feels a bit lighter to me. It does not have as hearty of a flavor, and actually tastes a little bit flat overall.

I like what Breckenbridge is going for here with the usage of vanilla beans, but I can’t help but feel this could be greatly improved. The Vanilla Porter is a solid beverage, but its metallic taste and general flatness leaves a lot to be desired as a porter. Perhaps worth a try if you love vanilla, but it’s not a personal favorite of mine.

I’m in the same boat with it. There’s a St. Louis/local establishment where I drink it because it’s the best option, and I enjoy it, but it’s nowhere near knocking my socks off. Basically, an above average beer… but not by much.
