Best of the Month: Without a doubt, Blue Is the Warmest Color. This film far exceeded my expectations, and I would easily put it in my top five from last year. I also really enjoyed the third season of Louie — a show that seems to get better every year.
Worst of the Month: I suppose that would be Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. While fun in spots, the film overall took itself too seriously for the subject matter. The phoned-in performances from Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton didn’t help either. I was also disappointed with the glitchfest that is Assassin’s Creed: Liberation.
Can’t go wrong with the most recent season of Louie, the “Elevator” series was gold. I also did enjoy Blue is the Warmest Color; it went on a bit too long but felt emotionally solid.
I can’t wait to start the new season of Louie. There were so many great episodes in the third season — loved the appearances from Parker Posey and David Lynch, too.
I’m still on season 2 of Louie but it’s such a great show, sometimes it’s so painfully honest and realistic it’s actually horrifying, given how I was expecting straight up comedy.
The third season pretty much turns into a full-fledged drama, and from what I hear, the fourth continues moving in that direction as well. It’s really interesting to watch the progression of the show — I can’t think of anything else that compares to it, really.
Blue is the Warmest Color is in my top 5 of last year as well. The theme of first love is so universal, and the performances excellent. The camera work is very in-your-face, I felt Adele’s facial expressions told large parts of the story.
Adele was amazing, wasn’t she? That could very well be my favorite performance from last year, regardless of gender. She was phenomenal.
It’s just a shame there was so much drama after the film’s release. It sounds like it was miserable to make.
Is that the lesbian film? No wonder you scored it so highly 😉
Hahaha. Have you had the chance to check it out yet?
Glad you love the latest X-Men movie and Face/Off, one of my fave 90s action flicks! Ahah, sorry you watched Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, I knew it was crap even from the trailer. I still might check out Maleficent on rental, too bad it wasn’t as good as I thought it’d be.
Yeah, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the new X-Men. Great follow-up to First Class. Face/Off was a riot — my review will be up this week.
Hansel & Gretel could have been “so bad it’s good” but it was just… average. Rumor has it they are making a sequel, too. :
I haven’t quite gotten the courage to watch Blue is the Warmest Color for two reasons: the very long running time and its subject matter. However, the sleuth of more than positive reviews that I have been reading certainly put pressure on me. I will give it a go very soon for sure.
Also, I haven’t been able to watch Louie, but I’m a fan of his comedy, so I expect to indulge in it sooner rather than later.
Thanks for sharing!
Yeah, I kept putting off Blue Is the Warmest Color for the same reasons. I can’t recommend it enough though. It’s one of the better films I have seen on the subject of young love, and it has one of the most amazing performances of the last several years.
I think the first three seasons of Louie are on Netflix. Definitely give it a shot — it’s one of the rare shows that continues to get better with age, too.
