Best of the Month: Revisiting Almost Famous was my highlight of the month. This was my first time seeing the extended “Bootleg Cut” as well as my first time watching the film on Blu-ray. It was just as much fun as I remembered, and it still remains one of my favorite films of all-time. As for first-time viewings, The Raid 2 was an unexpected highlight. I enjoyed the first entry in this newfound series, but the sequel is an entirely different animal. It’s a bit lengthy since the plot is given a much greater emphasis (perhaps unnecessarily so), but the action delivers in spades. The fight choreography is simply mindblowing, and the end result is the best action flick I have seen all year. I also started watching Deadwood, following along with Dan from Public Transportation Snob as he also watches the series for the first time. It only took one episode for me to get hooked. The cast, the characters, Al fucking Swearengen, the poetic and profane writing… I’m in love with it all. Can’t wait to start season two this month.
Worst of the Month: I saw a few duds last month. Man of Steel lost me about halfway through the film when it turned into generic superhero flick #17129, and it had some of the most shameless product placement I have seen in quite some time (Superman’s a Budweiser fan, really?). Bullet to the Head was an acceptable throwback to ’80s action movies, but it was utterly forgettable at the same time. Finally, I had been anticipating Jason Bateman’s Bad Words, but it left me cold. Bateman’s character’s constant anger and insults had me laughing every now and then, but overall the film fell flat. Maybe I’m just getting old, but I’m having a hard time seeing how giving booze to an 8 year old is funny… but I digress.
Upcoming in September: reviews for Top Gun and Pirates of the Caribbean, as well as a handful of other project entries. Maybe I’ll start writing about new movies again, too!
